This weekend we're fundraising (AKA tagging). This is a very important event, where we raise to money needed to operate the Sqn. It is mandatory for all NCOs and cadets in flights 1 to 4 to attend at least two days.

If you were assigned a spot and tag box on Monday, you can go directly to that spot on Friday (25 Sep 08) by 6 pm, and call the sqn cell (416-890-1964) to confirm you're there. If you haven't been assigned a spot, meet at the following location/times:

Fri 26 Sep - 6:00 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion (map & directions)
Sat 27 Sep - 9:00 am at the Royal Canadian Legion (map & directions)
Sun 28 Sep - 11 am at the Royal Canadian Legion (map & directions)

See you all there!

Want to get more involved in the Sqn? Well we've got lots of stuff outside the regular Friday night schedule to keep you busy, and its a lot of fun, here's what's going on:

Run & Shoot Team
This Saturday, September 20th, 10 am to 12 at Glenview, we're holding tryouts for a five-person team to compete in 166 Sqn's first annual Run and Shoot Competition on October 4th (AKA summer biathlon). We want to win it, so we need 180's best runners and marksmen! FCpl Shi is in charge of the team, and will need to pick two females and two males, so show up this Saturday to Glenview at 10 am, ready to run!

Drum & Bugle Band
180's notorious drum & bugle band is looking for new members, and whether you have experience in playing music or just drum pencils on your school desk, we'll teach you from scratch on a new instrument and how to perform complex maneuvres on the field to form an awesome band routine. Band competes in April, does various Christmas parades and shows, and performs at Annual. Come down this Saturday, September 20th, at 1 pm to join!

Pilot Ground School
The Pilot Ground School course (AKA Flying Scholarship) starts up on Tuesday, September 23rd, 6:30 - 9:30 pm at Glenview. The course runs every tuesday until January. This is mandatory for all cadets applying to Glider or Power for summer 2009 (power candidates may be exempt, but must get permission). The course is also open to any other cadets interested in aviation and highly recommended to those who will be applying for glider/power in 2010. Because of the level of the course, it's suggested you be 14 or older, but if unsure, just show up the first tuesday.

Drill Team
Tryouts will be happening on Saturday October 4th from 9 am to 12 to form 180's prestigous Drill Team for 2008-2009. The 16 person team performs a complex choreographed drill routine to compete at two competitions in March and April and show off at Annual. All cadets are encouraged to try out!

Coming up...
There's more teams starting up later on in the year, such as various sports teams for all the sports competitions throughout the year, biathlon (skiing + target shooting) in December and January, range (shooting) after January, and the Flag Parties in April and May, so stay tuned for those.

This past summer, six cadets from 180 competed against each other on YTV's Adrenaline Project, and this Saturday, the episode airs! The episode, full of obstacle courses, running, lots of mud, an almost drowning, some face-plants and a 30 foot drop, is airing this Saturday, 20 Sep, at 6:00 pm on YTV (cable channel 25 in Toronto).

So when you're back home from a day of Run and Shoot Tryouts and Band, tune in!

The Sqn BBQ scheduled for tomorrow has been cancelled due to the forecast rain. Due to the busy schedule there won't be another date for the BBQ, but we'll see if we can bring out the grill at some other nearby event...

Enjoy the rainy & humid weekend everyone!

This upcoming Friday (12 Sep 2008) is the first night of cadets of the new training year! It is mandatory for all cadets to show up as we will be updating cadet information and flight rolls. Here's some info about the first night:

  • Same time and place: 6:30 pm at Glenview Public School in full uniform
  • All cadets must have a completed Cadet Info Sheet (click here to fill out and print). This is required before you will be allowed on any 180 Sqn activities. If you are unable to print, we will have blank paper copies.
  • Grew out of your uniform over the summer? Supply will be open at 6:00 pm to order new uniform parts for cadets in flights 1 to 4. Cpls and up may exchange uniform parts on the spot if we have proper sizes in supply.
  • Will this be your first night down? Check out the Join Air Cadets section, and fill, print and sign a Recruit Application Package (click here to download) and bring it with you on Friday. You're going to have a great time...

Sqn BBQ
To kick off the year, we're having a BBQ at Earl Bales Park (click here for map and directions). We're meeting in the park at 11:00 am. Follow the path into the park, and you should see us. All cadets are invited, and we'll have sports, games and of course, the BBQ, so bring an appetite. We'll be ending around 3 pm.

Tagging
We'll be tagging (fundraising) on Friday, Saturday and Sunday 26 to 28 Sep 2008, so keep those days free. This is where we raise the money to keep the Sqn operating and it's very important. Tagging is mandatory for all cadets in flights 1 to 4. More info to follow...

Sqn Teams and Courses
Lots of the Sqn's teams and extra activities will be starting within the next month. More info will follow, but things to look forward to: Band, Drill Team, Sports, Run & Shoot Team, Pilot Ground School course. It's very recommended that you join one of the teams to get the most out of 180 Sqn, and you'll have a blast!
